Circus
When I found you
in the front hall
with two suitcases
I expected them
to simultaneously
burst open
revealing
polka-dot handkerchiefs
and coloured wigs
On your face
a painted tear
appeared
Meanwhile
I failed to hear
the punchline
Your words
forced through
a downturned smile
Joking aside
I did try
to stop you
but outside a car backfired
and you disappeared
into the ensuing confetti of smoke
My weeping
filled a bucket
and I threw it after you
only to see doves emerge
and take their freedom
just like you
