Mercedes Clarasó

Mercedes' pamphlet, A Blessing of Unicorns, was published in 2007, and is now
out of print. A new collection is being planned for 2010.

Alan Gay writes: In A Blessing of Unicorns Mercedes Clarasó uses unadorned rhyme and
free verse to show that unicorns are not merely the stuff of myth and legends: they exist
in our everyday lives. She makes them quietly step out of the page and into our heads.
If we would only bother to look, they can be found in storm clouds, traffic jams, in sweet
smelling meadows treading emeralds, even at a supermarket checkout. These poems
make us see things differently. I will never again look at a horse without seeing a silver
horn growing from its forehead. This is truly a blessing.

Sample poem (from A Blessing of Unicorns)

The Return of the Unicorns

One by one they came back
silent, unsummoned,
nibbling the grass at my feet.
Where had they been?
Where had I been
that I had not missed them?

Their horns were glinting in the morning sun
their coats smooth and well groomed.
Who then had fed and loved them all this time?

It seems I share my unicorns.
And I am glad they gladden other hearts.
They are a gift of grace, unmerited,
superfluous yet essential
stepping with delicate precision
along our wayward paths.
