After Strawberries
When I read ‘Strawberries’ I think of you,
I always think of you and our bodies’ juices
Mingling before those terrible harvests.
Red on red on a red towel,
You will remember and laugh
At the slaughter of our virtue
(as if we had any left)
We have done things to each other
That don’t belong in poetry,
Loved without care or regard
For our own safety.
And crashing together
In real time, bruised
Our bodies and fought
So hard to hold on to
Each other.
When I read ‘Strawberries’ I think of you
And the love that I gave you, that is yours
And yours alone, and the pain I handed to you.
